Science Mini Library 2
Why does Male Pursue Female?
Year July, 1993
Time 8 min.
Summary A male fruitfly, Drosophila melanogaster, chases after a female as he sings mating call, a love song, distinct from usual ones.

What genes are associated with this particular behavior?

Dr. Daisuke Yamamoto revealed some of the genetic background of reproductive behavior with fly mutants, such as "spinster" and "satori (a person with spiritual awakening)", a male mutant showing no interest to female but behaving as homosexual. These studies gave new insights and clarified the relation between behaviors and genes.

This video was first made as a Science Mini-Library Series exhibiting at the National Science Museum, Biohistory Research Hall, Tokyo, Japan.

After that, this subject was further expanded by the group led by Dr. Yamamoto as the "Yamamoto Behavior Genes Projects" on Exploratory Research for Advanced Technology of Japan (ERATO) supported by the Science and Technology Agency. In 1999, the second video "Sexual Behavior-Mechanism and Evolution" was recorded.
