Summary
This film provides the history of medicine and man in all ages and countries. After seeing it, people especially engaging in medicine said admirably that they were very encouraged and regained pride in themselves.
At one time, in both western and eastern ancient civilizations, people tried to dispense empirical treatments and many kinds of herbs to patients, and prayed to gods to heal diseases. Later, medical science was born in Greece, grew up in Arabia, and flowered in Middle Aged Europe where the University of Padova, Italy, was the center of the modern medicine. Andreas Vesalius (1514-64), a Belgian professor of surgery and anatomy in Padova, published the historical book on modern anatomy "Tabulae Anatomicae Sex" in 1543 when the heliocentric theory was also advanced. Modern science began to reveal the mechanism of the human body. Chemistry, which had grown out of alchemy, produced organic materials from inorganic substances, and produced synthetic drugs.
During these days, although Japan closed its door to Western countries, not a little Japanese researchers independently developed medicine: Toyo Yamawaki (1706-62) first dissected and studied a human body in Japan, and Seishu Hanaoka (1760-1835) succeeded for the first time in extirpation of breast cancer under general anesthesia in 1804. They got limited information on Western sciences through Dutch people and books landing at Dejima, which was the only town permitted to contact the West at that moment. Upon opening to the world, many Japanese started to study in Europe, and got involved and made alliances in modern bacteriology and modern medicine, for instance with Robert Koch (1843-1910) and Paul Ehrlich (1854-1915). At that moment in England, Alexander Fleming (1881-1955) discovered antibiotics. We also introduce the fact that rediscovered evidence of vaccination against smallpox was introduced in Japan by Sajuro Baba through the northern import route. Medical science which investigated the mechanism of body, tissues, and cells, has arrived at substances and DNA to describe life. Investigations of human body and pathogens will provide new strategies to fight against diseases based on medical discoveries.
Despite belief in medicine and pharmaceutics, even in present-day, people can't help but pray to God to save the patient, and still others believe in "migawari-jizo" as the substitute for the afflicted patient and "yakushi nyorai" the god of Health. From ancient times, numberless people have prayed and made efforts to save patients. Consequently, we have medicines partially providing answers to the war against diseases.
