The Living Body and Air Pollution
Year May, 1972
Time 24 min.

Summary How does air pollution affect us? In this film, we recorded effects of air pollutants on the respiratory apparatus of experimental animals using micro-cinematography. When mice were exposed to sulfurous acid gas, the cilia of the epithelial cells stopped moving and eventually fell off. With polluted city air (city ozone), the lung alveoli swelled and the blood flow surrounding capillaries eventually stopped. In another experiment, mice were kept at the center of Tokyo business quarters for 6 months. We could observe that in the course of time the lung became darker due to charcoal dust. These experimental footages vividly demonstrated the harmful effects of air pollution. We do not want to survive like experimental mice, rather we hope to stop any kind of pollution on the earth.

This film visually pointed out by scientific experiment the seriousness of environmental pollution, which has been a social problem since 1970s. This film was honorably invited for screening at the United Nation and at several other international meetings on environmental issues all over the world.
