Probing the Secrets of the Stomach

Summary
We have succeeded to record by a special filming technique the structure and function of the living stomach for the first time in the world. The surface of gastric mucosa appears like craters on the moon. Blood corpuscles are flowing among the craters. Our culture techniques can show living tissues and cells without destroying the tissue structure. Cells are dividing actively in the germinative layer. Newborn cells lift up old cells to the surface of gastric mucosa and make new tissue. Epithelial cells of the mucus membrane fully turn over within three days.
You can see moving nerve cells stretching fibers like antennae around them between muscles layer and gastric gland of fundus. "Parieral cells" are swinging their cell membrane and secreting gastric juice. The majour ingredient of gastiric juice is hydrochloric acid which activates pepsinogen to pepsin thus working as a active digestive enzyme. We also recorded transformation of the granules of parieral cells by addition of acetylcholine and gastrin.
In 1969, the jury of International Scientific and Educational Film Festival at Padova University commented us thus "This film demonstrated us the mechanism of the secrets of the stomach by the unique cell culture technique and the excellent filming technique. And also, by the story full of suggestion, this film presented us the great worth in the future of our science and education."
